Phase 2: Sunshine Hills Neighbourhood
Tree Protection Pilot Program Survey

Background

Earlier this year, the City conducted the Phase One Sunshine Hills Neighbourhood Tree Protection Pilot Program survey. Based on the feedback received, the City has identified three potential bylaw amendments that could form the basis of a Neighbourhood Tree Protection Pilot Program aimed at addressing community concerns about the loss of mature trees.

The proposed amendments* include:

  • Redefining a “large diameter” tree as a tree with a diameter of 50 cm or greater
  • Removing the provision that currently allows one tree to be removed within a 24-month period without an arborist report confirming the need for removal
  • Introducing a “Significant Tree” designation, which would establish a higher threshold for removal and associated fees

*This survey explains each proposed amendments and asks whether you support or do not support them.

These amendments are designed to work within the limits of the Provincial Community Charter. The Provincial Community Charter restricts how municipalities can regulate tree removal if doing so would prevent otherwise permitted development.

You're Invited

The City is now inviting property owners in Cougar Canyon, Sunshine Hills, and Scottsdale to review the proposed bylaw amendments and indicate whether they support implementing the pilot program in their neighbourhoods.

As the changes could apply to all properties within your neighbourhood, your feedback is important. Please note there is only one survey submission per property. The survey will take approximately 8 to 10 minutes to complete and will conclude on April 15, 2026.
